Will Medicine Fix Its Mistakes?
Hello, everyone. Thanks for listening to Wake Up, Look Up, a podcast where we connect events happening in real time to the gospel of Jesus Christ. I'm Zach Weihrauch and in today's episode, we're asking the question, will medicine fix its mistake? Uh, this is prompted by an interesting article in the Wall street journal by Dr. Kurt Miceli, uh, who leads an organization called Do No Harm. It's seeking to remove harmful practices in medicine. Harmful practices like gender reassignment surgery. When a teenager, a child, decides that they were born with the wrong body and seeks to transition from male to female or from female to mail. What Dr. Miceli points out is that 80% of teenagers who take that step end up regretting it. 80% want to reverse the care that they received later on in life. That is a staggering statistic, but not surprising because the Bible tells us there are only two genders, and God made you the right one. So kids want to go back to the natural alignment that God has given them. The problem with that is that While our secular culture celebrates the act of transitioning and even fights for, uh, teenagers to be able to undergo harmful surgeries. Like, for example, in the story of Chloe Cole, which the article talks about a teenager who underwent puberty blockers, testosterone injections, a double mastectomy, uh, all by receiving care that the M. Medical, uh, foundation and institution said they needed, now cannot receive reversing care. That's because the CDC does not actually have diagnostic codes for a teenager who says, oops, I made a mistake. I want to go back to the original gender and sex that I had at birth. In other words, we celebrate all 10 of the kids when they go through this surgery. But when 80% or eight of them come back and say, hey, I wish someone would have told me to stop because I now regret this, we tell them to take a hike. And no surprise, because that doesn't fit into our social, moral, political narrative. But this is an avenue where Christians should be pushing for change. We've spent so much time talking about whether or not a teenager should be able to transition. And of course, the answer to that is unequivocally no, that we've forgotten about those who already have. How do we make sure that they can get the care? And what would the Bible say about this? Well, first of all, as I alluded to, the Bible makes clear that gender is a part of God's design. Not only is it part of God's design, it's part of what it means to image God in Genesis 1:27. We're told that God made us in his image, male and female. He created them. Which means that part of what it means to image God is our maleness and our femaleness, that we in some sense don't fully image God unless we are together, male and female, each expressing the different aspects of God that we reflect. Of course, reclaiming the value of gender is a great thing for, uh, a teenager who's transitioned to do later on in adulthood. It's something we have to make sure there's a pathway for them to correct. What we're seeing here, by the way, is that lies always lead to harm. Uh, Paul says in Romans 1:25 that when we exchange the truth about God for a lie, when we exchange the glory of our Creator for the created, we hurt ourselves and other people. These teenagers are suffering because of our stupidity, because of our rebellion and rejection of God. They're suffering because the adults in their lives had formed their own definition of what it means to be human outside of God. And the truth is that kids have to be protected. They have to be protected by the law. They have to be protected by the church. They have to be and should be protected by their families. Jesus says in Matthew 18:6 that it'd be better for you to tie a big stone around your neck and go drown yourself than it would be to bring harm to children that God loves. Are we hearing this? Judgment is coming. And unfortunately, the reckoning is already here for confused teenagers that we have actually confused as a society. The Bible says in Galatians 6 that we reap what we sow. When we sow confusion among children, they reap the consequences. It's unjust and it's awful and it must be corrected. This isn't a political issue. It's a moral one. It's a biblical one. Keep in mind that in Psalm 147, we're told that God heals the broken heartED. That's what he is. He's a God of restoration, uh, a God of healing. And as his people, we have to champion the restoration and healing of people who have been harmed by their own sinfulness and the sinfulness of those around them. The government needs to recognize the need of children who have transition to go back to their original gender. It should be diagnosable, it should be treatable, it should be covered by insurance. And to be frank, it shouldn't have happened in the first place. Hey, thanks for watching this episode of Wake Up, Look Up.
