Who Defines You?
[Music]
hello everyone thanks for listening to
wake up lookup a podcast where we
connect events happening in real time to
the Gospel of Jesus Christ I'm Zach wck
and in this episode we're asking this
question who defines you this is based
on an article I read in the Atlantic
this week that was looking at something
called Mom
talk that's to as in Tick Tock he was
looking at social media trends and
reality television and the shaping
effect they're having on Mothers that's
because there are a lot of social media
trends out there for mothers uh the the
thinking on social media seems to be
that as a mom you are expected to be
super domestic able to make great meals
have your house always looking nice even
being able to knit and sew and all those
kinds of things also you're expected to
look great while you're doing it and
even to be and feel cool so the bar
that's being raised for women is be as a
home great at homemaking like Martha
Stewart but be a supermodel while you do
it and be cool the whole time and it is
crushing women that's because social
media is creating a scoreboard for us
it's telling us what winning looks like
and what losing looks like it's inviting
us to ask the question do I want to win
or do I want to lose and if I want to
win am I willing to do the things that's
also because a lot of the influencers
out there who are making you feel like
you should be and uh do more as a mom
are also selling you products that ah
look at that will help you be and do the
things they're telling you to do and by
the way this trend is not exclusive to
women I mean mom talk is for moms but
it's no different than similar trend out
there for men or for women who are not
moms social media it's constantly
telling us that if you really want to
live a life of meaning and purpose if
you want to be a great traveler a great
employee a great parent a great spouse a
great friend here is your scoreboard but
I want you to stop and consider
something for a second the single most
shaping voice in your life is the voice
that gets to tell you what the
scoreboard is it's the voice that is
telling you what winning looks like and
what losing looks like it's the voice
that tells you if you measure up or not
and the thing is as a Christian that
voice is supposed to be God's not some
mom influencer on social media have you
ever stopped to ask what is God said
about what it means to be a mother or to
be a wife or to be a sister or a friend
or any other role that even us guys play
what has God said about that let's let
God to find the scoreboard first because
he isn't selling us anything and second
because he loves us and knows what is
best for us listen here's a quick test
of whether or not mom talk or similar
Trends are affecting you when you're
scrolling on Instagram or Tik Tok or
Twitter or Facebook do you find yourself
putting your phone down and saying I
need to do more I I need to be more
creative I need to plan better birthday
parties I I need to be more and do more
listen who's saying that the reality is
that for most of us if we weren't
picking up our phones we wouldn't be
thinking those things if you want to
know how you're doing as a wife or a
mother or anything else ask God then ask
your husband and your kids but don't ask
your phone they don't know you put the
phone down and find contentment in the
satisfaction of knowing that God loves
you and that God knows what's best for
you and that the people you are caring
for and loving probably also think
you're doing a great job Mom talk is not
our scoreboard God's word is and I'm
sure he has more encouragement for you
than they do hey thanks so much for
