Wake Up, Look Up

wrock and in today's episode we're

asking the question do you need coaching

this comes from two things really uh one

is my own experience with person

personal coaching I've been working for

a while with a leadership coach helping

me to develop my organizational

leadership skills as my role

professionally changes uh and I've been

fascinated with what I thought I knew uh

what I didn't know and what I've learned

through that but then it's also

connected to an article I read in the

Atlantic this week that kind of

connected that to the medical field

because the article was actually making

the point that all of us need coach

including doctors now that was

interesting to me because doctors are

one that's one profession where they go

through extensive training like their

problem isn't lack of training their

schooling is incredibly long they spend

a lot of time in professional rotations

developing lure all these different

things that they have to go through uh

but the article was based on a study

that was done recently looking at

doctors young doctors as it relates to

infant in ination now infant intubation

is a pretty regular procedure when

you're operating on small children you

have to put them under but at the same

time it is a dangerous procedure I mean

intubation done incorrectly can lead to

oxy oxygen deprivation it can lead to

brain damage it can even lead to death

you don't want a small child to go very

long without being able to get air it is

a procedure that though regular is

dangerous and what the study looked at

is what would happen if right before a

young doctor did intubation let's say an

hour before an older doctor gave them 5

to 10 minutes of coaching just reminding

them of things to be aware of of how to

go about the procedure just kind of

coaching them through it and they

divided a group of doctors into two

groups half of them got coaching within

the first within an hour of the

operation uh just 5 to 10 minutes of

coaching and the other half did not and

what they found is that the results were

pretty striking the group that did not

receive coaching immediately before the

procedure got it right on the first try

about 82% of the time now that is a good

number 82% eight out of 10 times they

got it right on the first try unless

your child is one of the two that they

didn't because that's when it becomes

dangerous and we're talking about babies

a thousand babies means two out of every

10 being wrong is about 200 children

that that's too many but the group that

did get coaching uh that got coaching

from an older doctor 5 to 10 minutes

before actually got it right on the

first try nine out of 10 times so one

more child received better care a

hundred out of every thousand a thousand

out of every 100,000 and so on and so

forth and what the the article and the

study were making the point of is why

aren't Hospital doing more of this even

though doctors receive a ton of training

why aren't they doing few uh a few

minutes of coaching before procedures

but let's forget doctors for a second

the reason hospitals aren't doing that

is because they're busy and because our

thinking is I've been trained I've

passed my lure therefore I know what I'm

doing there's something in us that is

in8 against receiving coaching we like

to think that we've reached a point in

life where we know what we need to know

and we're no longer in need of other

people's help the problem with this is

that number one we don't usually know

what we think we know we're not as good

at what we think we're as good at we can

always stand to grow but the second is

that biblically speaking we're always in

need of what the Bible calls

discipleship the Bible is always calling

us in the New Testament for older men

and older women to speak into the lives

of younger men and younger women that's

because we always are encountering

things that exceed our own information

our own knowledge our own experience the

God's design for the church God's design

for life for parenting for money for

career for how we think about intimacy

for all these things is that we would be

able to go to someone a little farther

along and say to them hey what is it I

don't know what is it you wish you had

known can you give me some coach so the

question really for each one of us is

how resistant are we to seeking out

other people in our Lives who can speak

into our Lives who can give us the

wisdom that we lack uh what would it

look like for us to pursue coaching in

the Practical areas of life what would

it look like for us to find somebody in

our small group or in our Bible study or

in our sphere of influence in

relationships and say hey can we grab

coffee once a month can you speak into

my life I'm starting to realize I might

need some coaching in Practical areas of

following Jesus and of living out his

call in my life uh the results might not

be life or death the way it is for

doctors intubating infants but it might

be the difference between living a

nominal average kind of Christian Life

and really stepping into what God has

for you do you need coaching well God

thinks you do that's why he calls us to

it time and time again in the scriptures

go find a coach go be a coach and let's

help each other chase after Jesus a

little better in 2025 hey thanks so much
