Are We Outsourcing Fulfillment?

[Music]

hello everyone thanks for listening to

wake up lookup a podcast or we connect

events happening in real time to the

Gospel of Jesus Christ I'm Zach wrock

and in today's episode we're asking the

question are we

Outsourcing fulfillment this is prompted

by an article I read in the Wall Street

Journal called why I've become more

mindful about what I delegate the author

was talking about how more and more in a

prosperous uh kind of White Collar kind

of culture we end up paying people to do

the things or paying for the things that

people used to do for themselves uh we

don't cut our own grass we don't wash

our own car we don't change our oil so

on and so forth and while in some ways

that convenience frees us up to do other

things that might be more important and

create jobs for people who are good at

doing those things it increasingly

detaches us from the feeling of

fulfillment that that doing a job

completing a task often brings in the

article the writer talks about building

his kids a treehouse and he says look it

took two and a half years to do it it

probably would have taken someone else a

lot less time to do it it probably would

have been easier to pay someone but

building that Treehouse and then

watching in my kids play in it became so

meaningful to the author that he

actually got the Treehouse tattooed on

his body after the kids grew up that's

how meaningful it can be to actually

accomplish something we are prioritizing

convenience we are prioritizing free

time and neither one of those are bad in

and of themselves but does it

necessarily follow that a byproduct of

that is that we feel increasingly less

fulfilled less accomplished we feel

always busy but never really sure what

we did that day I know sometimes I feel

this I go home and my wife says how was

your day and what happened today and my

instant reaction is to say nothing now I

might have had 16 meetings but I'm not

sure what I built I'm not sure what I

actually accomplished what the article

is arguing is that we need some of that

we need to get back to that look I think

the Bible agrees you know the Bible over

and over again in Ecclesiastes 2 for

example talks about work and effort

being a blessing that being able to look

at what you've done with your hands

actually is part of what it means to be

human part of what it means to be

fulfilled The Book of Proverbs has a lot

to say about industriousness and and

feeling profitable about laying down at

night and being able to say I I not only

worked hard today but I actually

accomplished things in Genesis 2 when

God puts Adam and Eve in the garden and

he tells them to kind of shape the Earth

and to have dominion over it he has in

mind setting goals and actually doing

them uh the faithfulness in these kinds

of small things really does matter now

I'm not telling you someone else can't

cut your grass or someone else can't

change your oil I have no idea how to

change my oil so I hope that that's okay

but I am telling you not to

underestimate the meaningfulness of

regular tasks and getting things done

not to be so bent on creating more time

for yourself that just gets filled with

Netflix or Doom scrolling or just

anything that Wast your time and finding

at least a few things that you can do

that give you a sense of accomplishment

that give you a sense of purpose that

make you tired for the right reasons and

not just because we're all always tired

and if you have kids bring them along

show them the satisfaction of

productivity show them the satisfaction

of a Saturday to-do list with things

like cleaning the garage that you sit

down at dinner that night and say look

at all we've done don't you feel

productive God's desire is for you to

feel like your life matters and we spend

a lot of time talking about what that

means in the big things and maybe not

enough talking about what it means in

the little things find satisfaction

today in being productive in everyday

things because your life really does

matter hey thanks so much for watching
